painting for friday #22

Friday, April 28th, 2006

Coast Watcher

Well maybe not really 22.   I am pulling out my old work (for the show) and bringing it up so it looks like the same person painted it.  Putting in more detail.  Making the older paintings more realistic.  I reuse my stretcher bars, so I am restretching everything.  Because I have that option I am cropping a lot of the older paintings.  They feel so static - super centered on the canvas. I still don't know when the show is going to happen, but I said that I could be ready after this weekend…ahhhhh!  It wasn't quite dry when I took the photo - her necklace is a little shiny still, so impatient.  The Boy came by after he was done with work and we had a little impromptu dinner date.  I love spring, late night walks downtown holding hands…

Here is what I said about it and this is a small image of what it used to look like:

things that come from the postman…

A package from the lovely Lisa. She gets to pick out one my soft birds. (whenever she chooses!) Trixie was most interested in the green gum. They are sooo easy to swat around the room. (plus the gum inside rattles around!) This lovely little bunny now lives on the Boy's desk. I figured he could use a little mail love from the amazing Alicia. I have tons of other packages that I have been ordering around the world. I love everything and will post over the next few weeks.
Also if you haven't seen Johanna's new quilt series, go look.  I think my favorite is 'goodbye to brooklyn' and they are on sale in Brooklyn at the Flying Saucer.  I am going to stop by this weekend and see them in person.
We used to work together, so I got to see all the pieces that she was working on, now I have to wait like everyone else until it is on the web.

that ice cream jingle…

Monday, April 24th, 2006

I am going to start posting more than just music underground.
I have been photographing my favorite things about the city.
One of many favorites is a late night run for ice cream.  I love that; the warm air brings that jingle.  The jingle from childhood that sends us out the sidewalk in our sleep clothes.
I only remember ice cream coming during the day though, never late night.

Where you live do you have ice cream trucks?
Does that jingle bring about memories of childhood?

hanttula is amazing - can't stop the laughter.

painting for friday #21

Friday, April 21st, 2006

Exciting things happening over here. Nerve wracking too.
I have been kind of trying to show my paintings, not full force, but more like thinking about the possibility. I put an email out there and got a positive response. A possible show this summer.
Then I got an email this week, which said they would be ready for a show soon, as in as soon as I could be ready. Then I began to pace and fret and think, but yesterday I brought out a bunch of paintings that I had rolled up and began to be a little calmer. I think I have some paintings. Or rather paintings that I could make work together with the bird girls.

Late yesterday spreading everything out. Stretching some things back on the stretcher bars and breathing a little easier. Don't get me wrong I am really excited, and totally scared out of my mind. I have an art background I studied photography, but I have only been painting for two years. And really consistently painting for as long as I have been doing this painting a week thing! (I did a little look in my sections - since last September).

breakfast at spoon…

Thursday, April 20th, 2006

The birds having breakfast at spoon.

Joe there in the back, then Sparky and Audrey.  Doesn't breakfast look better at Spoon!

Joe knows since he was a fat kid that the pastries are dangerious for him.

Lovely little Audrey by the fruit and granola (maybe I should have switched her and Joe)

Because I know how tempting those chedder chive scones are - I have one every morning.

sunshine on the fire escape…

Tuesday, April 18th, 2006

One of my favorite things about New York City are the fire escapes.  The are so lovely and interesting.  This fire escape at work is a little scary.  It is super long because it covers two windows, so the gap where the stairs are open is huge.  The long birds didn't seem to mind it.  The just looked lovely.I am sorry about the fast move.  My web guru is really amazing and very quick.  I have been thinking that I wanted a freestanding blog, so I hope you  find you way to my new home. Also for those of you that have asked, I will be selling any and all of the softies at Renegade in Brooklyn, but if you are interested in any of the birds that you have seen let me know because they are all one of a kind (I am working from very loose patterns!).

On to the photos!

Sparky and Audrey telling the others, "its totally safe out here".

Everyone from left to right.  Peggy (with the quirly q), Joe (he used to be a fat kid), Audrey is a bit of a busy body, and Sparky the long bird that started it all.

Last shot as the go up the stairs.

really glad for friday (but no painting)…

Friday, April 14th, 2006

We had a really crazy week here. Long nights, early mornings, and I just couldn’t pull it together to get a painting done for today. I was thinking that I would have to wait awhile for fedex to pick up the backdrops and I could squeeze in a painting, but our guy got here in no time.
Fingers crossed that there are no hitches and it makes it to California tomorrow morning. We painted two huge backdrops for Weeds. And everyone is exhausted. Got the job Tuesday to be completed TODAY. And we did it. The boss lady is really amazing! One of the backdrops was 20′ high by 18′ wide and the other was 18′ high x 23′ wide. Started the second one last night. The joys of working late. I really can’t believe we made it. I don’t know how that happens. Its like the theater and the show must go on. I was here and I am still amazed.

Instead of a full painting I have beginnings on a couple. One more that needs to be stretched. I have notes on this photo here.

the long birds…

Here they are in the bag ready to head out the door.

Sparky outside the window of spoon…

Spoon is my most favorite place in the world for breakfast.
I love the people that work there…they make my day.
It is a ritual that even durning my poorest days I would allow myself that treat.
A cup of hot chocolate - perfect and not too sweet and a delicious buttery scone.

The long birds (so named until the Boy thinks of something more clever) and I did a photoshoot at Spoon…photos inside next week.

a little love from spring…

streetfair.jpg

This was the only time we had someone come up to us while we were shooting. It was early in the day, so I didn’t have a spiel about what we were doing. When I said that no I wasn’t in school, she gave me the weirdest look. I guess you can’t do wierd things without being in school? Who knew?

firealarm.jpg

This is one of the last photos, we were walking home from the diner. But I already have ideas for the next time. Plus I have some film to pick up today.

Check out Mr. Toast at Coney Island taken by the talented Anne!

I am extremely proud of the Boy. He just started his new film! Hurrah! Not only that, but he has a deadline for the video game and two short films that he is finishing up. Busy week for him! After that we have to have a little celebration.

A huge thanks to Kath for my write up about my robots in whipup! I feel so honored! You’d think I get my act together and post some of my new robots, but no such luck! I hope the birds are ok as a replacement for now.

singer.jpg

I took this photo when Aiko was here. We were headed up to the Cloisters.
It is surprising how terrible she (the singer, I mean) was…how unbelievably wrong her voice was.
But something made her really amazing.
Something just made me watch…her sing Besame Mucho.
