friday painting #40

left behind
16" x 16"

I am posting this a day early…since I won't be solid until a couple of hours into my flight tomorrow. I hope my weekend goes well, thank you for the well wishes…I'll be back on tuesday (hopefully, I'll have to unfurl myself first)

I took this photograph by accident, but I might have to come back and revisit this robot and add a flare to the painting. It gives this guy a bit more hope.

a bunny idea…

Wednesday, September 27th, 2006

I am headed out of town again this weekend.  I was thinking of trying to tackle this little guy and finishing up a couple of dolls that I have been working on.  Taking a little bit of fabric and thread with me. It is not going to be exactly a pleasant trip my grandfather is sick and I haven't seen grandparents or my mom in years.  I have some trepidation about the trip. More on that later.

I don't check my luggage, so I can't take tons of fabric. I am thinking the head would be two colors…and the body one color. My initial color combinations were two greens, or grey & pink, or yellow & blue (all felt).  I don't have grey or pink right now and probably wont make it to the fabric store before I go, but any thoughts?  Or any other color combos that you'd like to see? I appreciate the help. If this bunny goes well…I might do a limited edition run like I did with the penguins.  I have a couple more penguins left to make until I get to fifty.  Then, no more penguins from me.

She kept popping into my head when I began reading this wonderful book.
I would have gone with a darker image as the book progressed.
Amazing circus images are swirling in my head (maybe some will make their way onto canvas).
I am terribly saddened that the author will never write another book.
It is definitely our loss.
Thank you to the public half of the la power couple for letting me borrow her book.

softie with a creature

Monday, September 25th, 2006

The softie posed with one of Tim Biskup's larger than life creatures during my trip out to lala land.

This weekend I met with Amy (who is a wonderful photographer); she picked up her painting from last exit because the show is going to be there for a couple more weeks. It is very humbling and flattering that someone would want to hang one of my paintings on their wall.

maine coast
20" x 10"

This week is tototally different. I wanted to try for moody. Inspired by photos of what I think of as maria's beach.

Sarah found some old polyurethane that is thick and amber colored, so I experimented with this painting.

It was super thick and syrupy.

It changed my colors, below is the before shot, above is right after the polyurethane was applied.

Taking spelling notes on napkins…it turned into my own little still life after I used it as a coaster.

*update my web guru fixed my comments issue…was worried that no one liked me…silly girl*

page of robots

Tuesday, September 19th, 2006

Whenever the girls aren't flowing I draw pages of robots..this started from driving by a building in la. There was this pattern on the window and I thought it looked like big robot eyes.

Love Jake Parker's robot story in Flight 2

the foretelling
22" x 28"

I think the backdrop for Anna Sui turned out the best.
And I love most everything in her show…especially the black and white dresses with the bits of red.

Lastly for fashion week we also did Milly - sort of surfer girl shirt image (here is last season's fall). My left arm is still aching from fashion week. I think I pulled something…and it is slow to heal.

a close up:

This was a successful for me painting. And doing more wasn't any harder, even with the extra color study.

I need some ideas for my netflix queue…I only have eleven movies…anyone have anything I MUSt watch?
Although the fall tv season starts next week - I love television, & a new season seems like there is possibilities for falling in love with new tv shows.

water study & photocrawl

Wednesday, September 13th, 2006

Anne & I were thinking of expanding our photoday into a photocrawl. In the same vein as the sketchcrawl, but not all day long (since mid-day can be bad light). We'd meet up at a location and then photograph for a couple of hours…then eat and chat. Allow ourselves to be braver by photographing together.

Our plan is Coney Island on October 21.
Meet early and photograph until lunch.
Then we can go out again and photograph or call it a day.
If you want to play along send me an email…wendyATgreengirlartDOTcom.
Coney Island's season ends in October…so it should be slightly ghost town.
Any kind of camera - digital, polaroid, SLR, point & shoot…whatever you love best.

On another separate note…my water study…I sort of liked doing the study…do other artists do color studies, or layout studies?

Oh and Nanette Lepore was last nightthis turned out beautifully.
Tonight, the last two shows Milly & Anna Sui.

a mystery & a study

Tuesday, September 12th, 2006

I have no idea how I got this pattern of dust in my hair. It is strange and kind of a mystery. I walked into the office and they told me I looked like a strange bird girl…wierd.

Fashion week for us at least is pretty much over. We just have the touch up to do.

Shows that have gone up so far:
Baby Phat
(not so sure about the 'grills' in the models mouth)
John Varvatos
(there is a real wall that was built that they walk through & a backdrop behind it as well)
Marc Jacobs
(the washy blue is what we painted…it was a huge set our backdrop alone was 80 feet wide)

I am doing a color and paint study for my painting this week. (the water sketch was the big winner) Here is a rough base for the study. I'll show how I tackled the water tomorrow. I don't usually do studies but I thought it might be kind of fun for this painting.

sketching friday…

Friday, September 8th, 2006

I was afraid this might happen, what with my trip to lala land and the craziness that is fashion week.  We are far and away better off than I expected…but working late means that I don't really feel like staying even later to paint. So this week I have two sketches that I am excited about and I thought I would let you all decide which to paint next.  I'll be painting both, but they are a little more elaborate than my others.  I am trying to create more of the external world.  Trying to push my limits. So what would you like to see painted first?

The giant and the puppet girl or the girl at sea getting a lift in the storm?  Thanks for your help.
