[...] green girl did a post about the mary statues today and i wrote a response and then felt slightly self-conscious about it (my thoughts were a bit tattered and scattered) but her post reminded me of last mother’s day when marty and i put a very weathered mary statue with balloons on my mother’s deck — we snuck up there in the pouring rain (were gonna put it in her back yard overlooking the pond so she’d see it from her kitchen window in the morning — her neighborhood’s very chi-chi and she hates tack and kitsch)…well, i didn’t count on her being up still and she caught us redhanded crouched on the deck trying to avoid her spotlight (of course, she called for my dad but by the time he responded, we were gone — i mean a former marine who spent one of the bloodiest years in vietnam is just not gonna get too worked up over a possible intruder, y’ know?) — felt like a deer in the headlights — but she still has the statue even tho she occasionally remembers to ask me when i’m gonna go over and get it…i love those statues and how about the upside-down bathtub shrines? — but as my mother would say, that’s my shanty irish immigrant roots (that i’m very proud of)… [...]

Yup, Catholics. I've seen some people put little glass houses around their statues to protect them from the elements.
